The Aeronautics Laboratory test facilities are equipped with sensors and instrumentation that can be used to measure forces and moments, temperature, pressure, velocity, and flow rates. The forces and moments are measured with a series of internal force balances, an external balance, or pressure ports/rakes.

Velocity measurements

  • Pitotic-static pressure
  • Hot-Wire Anemometry (HWA)
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
  • Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV)

Flow visualization

  • Dye-injection (in the water tunnel)
  • Schlieren photography
  • Oil flow visualization
  • High speed video

Figure 12 shows one of the PIV laser systems, and Figure 13 shows one of the force balance systems used in the subsonic wind tunnels.
